Tim Russell has long been one of the best in Super Late Model racing on the east coast of Florida. The multi-time champion and 2009 Florida Governor's Cup 200 winner was looking to add a second win in the biggest race at New Smyrna Speedway, the 48th Annual Florida Governor's Cup 200 on Saturday, October 26.
When the dust settled, Russell, in the Barn Light Electric No. 36, battled his way back from deep in the field at the start to finish second to Alabama's Augie Grill.
"I'm proud of everything we were able to accomplish this weekend," said Russell. "I have to thank Bryan, Donna and all the employees from Barn Light Electric who came out to support us this weekend. It means a lot to have their support and the support of so many in the crowd here this weekend to help us get this strong finish."
Russell mixed it up with Grill as well as Bubba Pollard, Austin Theriault and several other top-notch Super Late Model drivers that came to town to try and steal the big prize.
"Congrats to Augie Grill, he's a heck of a racer," said Russell. "My crew worked their tails off all weekend. We brought back the same car we had here three weeks ago. I don't know if we had a bad set of tires or what, but we were about to wreck in qualifying and we played catch up all day long."
After starting 17th, Russell worked his way forward and was 11th by lap 100 after pitting for fresh tires a few laps prior. He worked his way to the front before Grill got by him for good on lap 141.
"It was loose in the first part of the race, but we were able to make a couple adjustments at the break that helped," explained Russell who picked up 15 spots by the end of the race. "Then we got a little too tight at the end of the race to run down Augie."
For Russell it was his third runner-up finish in this race to go along with second-place finishes in 2008 and 2010. He of course won the race in 2009. Overall he has six top 10 runs in this event.
As for now the 2013 season has come to a close for Tim Russell Racing and TRI Driver Development, however sponsorship opportunities could put the No. 36 back on track very soon. The 2014 schedule will begin in the Red Eye 100 at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) on January 4th. The event is traditionally the opening of race season in Florida and is one that Russell won in 2009 and 2012.
