2012 has been a different type of season for Tim Russell. The Lake Mary, Florida driver has basically won everything under the Florida sun in a Super Late Model in years past, but this season Russell has been focusing on his Tim Russell Inc. Driver Development program.
Saturday night at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway, however, Russell got to witness the best of both worlds. He took the victory in a the New Smyrna Pro Late Model season finale, driving a car and engine package that he has never competed with before, while his TRI teammate Devin McLeod won the overall series championship.
"It was really nice to get back into victory lane," said Russell. "We have run less than a dozen races this year as a driver and this is only our second win. It's not that we don't want to race, but we have had some great opportunities to run with Devin McLeod, Kyle Larson and some others."
McLeod won four of the five Pro Late Model races coming into the season finale and was looking to add another victory. However, with Russell having a second car out there and the championship on ice, the McLeod effort resulted in some practice laps and a few in the future to lock up the championship and start looking forward to 2013.
"It was by deign so we can focus on SpeedWeeks with Devin come February," added Russell, who qualified third, but re-drew the pole starting position for the 100-lap feature. "It would have been nice to have two Russell cars battling for the win. It was tough even without him in the field as I had my hands full with Rich Clouser. We put on a real good battle up front for the win."
The victory pushes the Russell team total to eight this season. That includes wins with Tim Russell Driver Development with Kyle Larson and McLeod.
Now, Russell will turn his attention to the November 17th Florida Governor’s Cup 200 Super Late Model race at New Smyrna. Russell has run the Governor's Cup 200 six times prior to this season and he has posted four-straight podium finishes with runner-up results sandwiching his 2009 victory.
